Bio
Niña Volcán channels cumbia’s folkloric pulse through a contemporary, global lens. Formed in Toronto, the collective fuses traditional cumbia rhythms with electronic textures, jazz improvisation and afrobeat grooves to craft lively, evolving music that moves both dancefloors and adventurous listeners. Their high‑energy performances have lit stages at Drom Taberna, BSMT 254 and Bloom Festival, and they’re regulars at Toronto events like DoWest, Beaches Jazz Festival and the FIFA Trophy Tour.
In 2025 they released their debut album Macondo, produced with support from an Ontario Arts Council recording grant; the record features celebrated percussionist Pedro Ojeda (Romperayo, Frente Cumbiero) and was mixed by Eblis Álvarez (Meridian Brothers). Macondo will be issued on vinyl in August 2026. Building on that momentum, summer 2026 marks the band’s first tour beyond Toronto with confirmed appearances at River & Sky (Fields, ON), FTMS (Sherbrooke, QC) and Cultivate (Port Hope, ON), with additional dates forthcoming. Niña Volcán has received radio support from CBC Big City and Jazz.FM’s Café Latino and earned playlist placements on World Wide Gems and Rhythm Passport. Continually exploring new collaborations and sonic directions, the band expands modern cumbia’s possibilities while honoring its pan‑Latin roots.
